Planting daily seeds.

What makes a good day? What happened that day to make you feel good? Maybe it was an event you planned, and everything worked out. Or it could have been your presentation, and you " killed" it. Something took place for you to say, “This was a good day.“ Author William A. Ward once said, “Judge each day not by the harvest you reap but by the seeds you plant." I love this and hope you feel the same way. Each day, we get to choose what to focus on. When we focus on the harvest, as Ward put it, we are centered on our gain. On the other hand, when we focus on “planting seeds,” we serve and impact the lives [...]

Why should I join you?

That is a question for every leader who is building a team. As a leader, you must have an answer to this question. It may never be asked directly. I have learned that people join people and people leave people. You may have a great company and brand; however, at the end of the day, they are joining YOU. The person they meet for the interview sets the tone for the answer to this question. As the leader, if you have a representative conducting recruiting interviews, you must take ownership and responsibility for the answer. People are drawn to the leader they believe will add value to their lives. So, what is the real value you are bringing to the relationship? Is [...]

Comparison is the thief of joy.

The quote, "Comparison is the thief of joy," is from Eleanor Roosevelt. When I read this many years ago, it really hit home. Like most of you, I consider myself somewhat competitive. I like to win just like the next person. As a result, I naturally tended to compare myself or my company to others. In business, I was part of a large distribution network with over 100+ organizations like mine from all over the country. The parent company would publish monthly standings based on sales. Our location was Buffalo N.Y. We would appear in the publication with offices in New York City, Los Angeles, etc. We couldn't compete with the volume of business they were doing. At times, quite frankly, [...]

What is a leader to do?

If you are leading, nothing is more rewarding than guiding someone to grow and become all they can be. It doesn't matter if you lead a large company, a department, or a small group of team members. Your leadership (your influence) matters. Leading, as you know, is also very challenging at times. People are complex, emotional, and have preferences (I could make a long list of what I mean). So what is a leader to do? Is there a secret sauce? Well, I'm not sure about a secret formula, but I can remind you and share some truths I have come to hold on to it. Your people buy into you before buying into your vision and plan.  As a [...]

Your people want answers

As leaders, we know that many activities are critical to the organization's success. Right now, I am identifying FOUR that we must intentionally improve. I believe we own the results; we may have selected someone on the team to execute—but ultimately, we own it. Those four include selecting qualified people, setting expectations, training them, and developing them. Below, I have selected some potential questions your people may be asking themselves and are looking for answers that only you can answer. Do I know what is expected of me? Is there 100% clarity on the what, where, when, how? Am I equipped with the tools and resources to do the job effectively? Who can I count on for direction and support [...]
