How is your self-awareness?

How is your self-awareness? The Institute for Health and Human Potential defines emotional intelligence, as the ability to recognize, understand and manage our own emotions, and recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others. That's a lot to digest. In simple terms: we need to be aware of the emotions that drive our behavior and impact people (positively and negatively), and learn how to manage those emotions, especially under pressure. The first step toward becoming an emotionally intelligent leader is understanding the components: Self-awareness Self-management Motivation Empathy Social skill For this week's topic, I want to start with self-awareness. I have found for many people (myself at the top of the list) we tend to be more comfortable pointing out [...]

What business are you in?

What business are you in? This is the time of year that business plans for the new year are already formed, or at least are in process. Therefore, it may be a good reminder to ask yourself the question of, "What business am I in?" It shouldn't be a surprise to you that your answer has nothing to do with making a profit. Obviously you will be out of business if you don't. Profit is a result of when we answer the question correctly. Over the years I have wrestled with this question, but have discovered a simplistic answer. For me, "the purpose of business is to create a customer and to satisfy a human need." As you review your [...]

Leaders cannot overcommunicate

It's really simple, when we take on the role of a leader, we implicitly acknowledged we are the Chief Communication Officer, or the CCO. Communication is at the core of our leadership. Author John Hamm in his book, "Unusually Excellent," states, "Communication is to an organization is like water is to a garden, it keeps things vital, growing and healthy."  What leader does not want an organization that is vital, growing and healthy? He further points out, "Our people are like the plants -- if they are neglected they show signs of drought early and live in distress until we return them to a hydrated state." This is an excellent illustration for us to ponder. When we are effectively communicating we [...]

Decisive Decision-Making is Key

We make decisions all day long. Some are more important than others. Some are "Mission Critical" and have serious consequences. Whatever the case or circumstance may be, there are always consequences with every decision. I've learned, the decisions I make today, will determine the stories I tell tomorrow. Certainly our gut and intuition have a role in decision-making, however, gut and intuition are typically based on our past experiences. That is fine, we just need to be careful with too much emotion clouding our decision. Let's remember, the emotion of anger is the most prominent emotion of impending good judgment. The following are some guidelines I use in decision-making. While they are very basic, hopefully you will find them helpful: [...]

What’s in a vision?

If you Google vision, you will find many resources on how to craft the perfect vision statement. Creating a vision for any organization takes time, effort, and leadership support; but they are essential to the future of any organization.  Here are a few things I think are important to creating a vision. Your people will never buy-in to your vision until they have bought into you.  Don't be naive. Just because you are in charge doesn't mean you have automatic buy- in. Your leadership must be earned. I have learned there are two aspects people must buy-in: YOUR CHARACTER and YOUR COMPETENCE. In other words: can I trust you? And how will you help me get better? The vision must be [...]
