Someone is waiting.

Well, truth be told, they may not be waiting; however, there is likely someone you need to confront in your organization or team. Confronting an individual about an issue is simply part of leadership. Procrastinating only hurts, I have learned that painfully throughout the years. Why is confrontation so difficult? I believe we often misunderstand its purpose. Our goal should always be not to punish or excommunicate but to restore. I have developed a checklist for you to consider when faced with the need to confront someone. Ask yourself, "Is this issue really big? Who are the stakeholders affected? Check your motive, have the right mindset -- help, not humiliate Be specific- no hints, and don't beat around the bush [...]

A simple question.

As a leader, I have discovered powerful questions are the key to effective coaching and the development of people. So here is my question, "How powerful and impactful are your questions?" Great questions are like gold, very valuable, and also rare. We need to take care and intend not to ask closed-end questions. Answers from a team member that are Yes, No, Ok, Fine fail in providing accurate information required in addressing potential issues/opportunities. Also, these types of questions often lack what is needed to bring out the best solution to the team member’s growth. Like many skills required as a leader, learning to ask powerful questions requires time, practice, and training. However, when learned these questions not only add value [...]

Are you a leader or a coach?

Here is what I know to be true: great leaders are not leaders of followers, they are leaders of leaders. The very essence of leading is to get more leaders not more followers. That is how we get the multiplier effect.  So, the question for you today is, "Who on your team are you coaching into a great leader?" The bottom line is if you are in a position of leadership, you are a coach. Your mentoring, instructing, leading by example, encouraging, challenging, and praising are all part of being a leader and a coach. We all have an opportunity to make an impact on another on the team. So today, I’m reminding us to constantly be looking for opportunities to coach [...]

What do your people expect of you?

Today I am sharing a brief reminder for us as we continue the journey of leading others. I have discovered the people we have influence over have expectations of us. Our people want to feel valued, and they want to feel as though their efforts matter, and that they count. Our people want to be connected to the mission and vision, even though they may never tell you that. So, tell them where they fit, and how important they are. We all respond well to positive reinforcement, so let’s be sure we let them know they count, and that they matter. My understanding is that we have the basic human need to feel valued, feel important, and that part of the leader's [...]

The buck stops here.

Depending on your age, you may not be aware of that slogan. President Harry Truman had a sign on his desk in the Oval Office that stated “THE BUCK STOPS HERE.” This phrase during that time become very popular. Well, that may have been many, many years ago, however it applies just as much today as it did then. I have found the truth is whatever your role may be: CEO, Dist Supervisor, Dept. Head, School Principal, it doesn’t matter, YOU COUNT THE MOST. What I know to be true is, PEOPLE JOIN PEOPLE and PEOPLE LEAVE PEOPLE. Research has proven this time and time again. It is not always about money or perks. These may get them in the door, but [...]
