Connecting with the Type A Treatment.

You know that connection is a key to developing the relationship and, in turn, developing people. It all starts with the leader connecting. As leaders, we need to be very intentional when connecting with those we choose to lead. We need to remember they want to be seen. They want to be understood. They want to be valued. They want to be heard. After all, don't YOU? We can only do that when we are upfront and personal. That is where the impact will come from, not on the stage or in a meeting with others present. So here is the TYPE A treatment: Give them 100% ATTENTION. Be locked in on everything they say. Eliminate any potential distractions. Listen [...]

Your people want answers

As leaders, we know that many activities are critical to the organization's success. Right now, I am identifying FOUR that we must intentionally improve. I believe we own the results; we may have selected someone on the team to execute—but ultimately, we own it. Those four include selecting qualified people, setting expectations, training them, and developing them. Below, I have selected some potential questions your people may be asking themselves and are looking for answers that only you can answer. Do I know what is expected of me? Is there 100% clarity on the what, where, when, how? Am I equipped with the tools and resources to do the job effectively? Who can I count on for direction and support [...]

You need to invest your time with those who will provide you with the best ROI. LBWA stands for Leadership By Walking Around. Each morning, when you rise, your daily calendar is filled with plenty of opportunities to impact others and make a difference. You have set meetings, one to one’s, decisions to make, problems to solve, deadlines to meet, and calls to make, some more important than others. I believe someone on your team, in your company or department, is waiting for You to Be Their Somebody Today. [...]

The daily five.

In Rubaiyat of Omar Khayam, translator Edward Fitzgerald writes: “The moving finger writes; and, having writ moves on: nor all thy piety nor wit shall lure it back to cancel half a line, nor all thy tears wash out a word of it." The bottom line is yesterday is gone forever, and tomorrow is no guarantee. But today is yesterday’s tomorrow and it is all we have. In my recent book, Make Today Your Masterpiece, I share a concept John Maxwell uses. I have adopted the concept to measure my masterpiece for today. It is called The Daily Five. Here is how it works: identify five daily activities you are willing to commit to. I’m not referring to appointments, meetings or [...]

Your Masterpiece

As many of you know, I love the phrase, "Make Today Your Masterpiece."  So much so that I decided to write a book with that title. In a recent workshop I was conducting, one of the participants asked me what would constitute a masterpiece on any given day. Well, a good question of course. The answer is personal. I responded by reminding everyone of the definition of a masterpiece. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines a masterpiece as, "Great work, showpiece, a perfect model, things done or made with masterful skill." What makes it personal is that at the end of each day, you reflect on your activity and your actions to determine if the day was your greatest work, your [...]
