Oftentimes when we are in “coaching mode” we may be talking too rough.  We think we have to impart our wisdom as the best means of coaching.  Obviously, there is a place for instruction.  However, I am learning the foundation for an effective coaching session is in asking good questions.

When we ask questions, we can learn so much.  When we ask questions we express respect, we demonstrate interest in the other person.

Some of the qualities of effective coaching questions are:

  • Be brief
  • Be clear
  • Be focused
  • Be relevant
  • Be constructive
  • Be open-ended

I love open- ended questions.  I have found them to be the most effective.  Open-ended questions permit exploring possible solutions without interrogating.
