Culture of Empowerment

Leading author and consultant, Ken Blanchard states “People already have power through their knowledge and motivation.  The key to empowerment is letting this power out." So what is empowerment? It is the process of unleashing the power in people -- their knowledge, experience, motivation, and focusing that power to achieve the positive outcomes for the organization. As leaders, we should be striving to create a culture of empowerment.  To do so, we may need to scrub some traditions, habits and even language.  For example -- instead of dictating tasks to do – see yourself as a coach -- a partner in unleashing their skill and our knowledge. How about changing the word planning to visioning.  Visioning suggests a more inclusive [...]

There is no Multi-Tasking in Coaching

What can we give our best people?  The better question is: what should we give our best people? We certainly need to provide the resource for them to grow.  We need to help equip them with the knowledge and skills for them to make an impact. What I believe our key people need is our time, in fact more important than time is our energy. Author Simon Sinek in his book Leaders Eat Last illustrates this point with a parent attending the child’s soccer game.  He states, "If a parent goes to watch their kid's soccer game but only looks up from their mobile device when there is cheering, they may have given their time, but they haven’t given their [...]

Human Capital

Author Dave Anderson in his book Up Your Business: 7 Steps to Fix, Build, or Stretch Your Organization states: “there is one thing worse than training people and having them leave your organization, it’s not training them and having them stay."   I believe the most important asset we have is our people.  Let’s call them “Human Capital."  As a leader we must commit to a process of training, coaching and mentoring our people.   I found it is always a good idea from time to time to evaluate the process -- our plan for developing and equipping our people.   As leaders we must INVEST time and money in good people, if we don’t we are likely to lose [...]

Coaching Mode

Oftentimes when we are in “coaching mode” we may be talking too rough.  We think we have to impart our wisdom as the best means of coaching.  Obviously, there is a place for instruction.  However, I am learning the foundation for an effective coaching session is in asking good questions. When we ask questions, we can learn so much.  When we ask questions we express respect, we demonstrate interest in the other person. Some of the qualities of effective coaching questions are: Be brief Be clear Be focused Be relevant Be constructive Be open-ended I love open- ended questions.  I have found them to be the most effective.  Open-ended questions permit exploring possible solutions without interrogating.

Management vs. Leadership

Is there one superior to the other?  Is there a distinction?  What is the distinction?   Management is processes that keep people and technology running smoothly.  In simple terms- its systems, procedures and processes.  All must be “managed” to produce the outcomes required.   The important aspects of management are:  planning, budgeting, organizing, staffing, controlling, problem solving.   Leadership creates the organization,  casts the vision and leads change.  In simple terms: it's influence, it's people.   Author and Harvard Professor John Kotter in his book: Force for Change, asserts when the above aspects of management function effectively, there is a degree of predictability.  This can produce short term results.   The important aspects of leadership are: establishing and communicating direction, [...]
