Better is first.

Recently, I was referred to a CEO by a CEO client of mine. My client has experienced significant business growth in the past two years and mentioned our work to his friend. We scheduled a "get acquainted "meeting at a coffee shop. Upon questioning him, he clearly stated he wanted to expand and get bigger. He has four retail locations in South Florida and wants 10 in the next three years. I know I shocked him to pause when I said I don't believe I'm his person. I pointed out that I don't work in the "bigger" space but in the better" space. I further pointed out that if we partnered, the focus would be on improving. Every aspect of [...]

If it ain’t broke.

I bet you could finish the line above; you likely have heard it or used it yourself. When things seem to be working smoothly, leave it alone. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." That's right, save your energy for what isn't working. First of all, if you have a system or process that is not functioning as it should, you certainly need to give it your attention. I have a challenge for all today. I am challenging us not to fall into the trap of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it. "Here is what I have learned from not subscribing to that mindset. The system or process could be working fine at a particular time; however, there could [...]

Your people want answers

As leaders, we know that many activities are critical to the organization's success. Right now, I am identifying FOUR that we must intentionally improve. I believe we own the results; we may have selected someone on the team to execute—but ultimately, we own it. Those four include selecting qualified people, setting expectations, training them, and developing them. Below, I have selected some potential questions your people may be asking themselves and are looking for answers that only you can answer. Do I know what is expected of me? Is there 100% clarity on the what, where, when, how? Am I equipped with the tools and resources to do the job effectively? Who can I count on for direction and support [...]

L-B-W-A

When you are intentional about Making Today Your Masterpiece, you will make a positive impact on others. For most leaders, we tend to gravitate to those who have the greatest potential. You need to invest your time with those who will provide you with the best ROI. LBWA stands for Leadership By Walking Around. Each morning, when you rise, your daily calendar is filled with plenty of opportunities to impact others and make a difference. You have set meetings, one to one’s, decisions to make, problems to solve, deadlines to meet, and calls to make, some more important than others. I believe someone on your team, in your company or department, is waiting for You to Be Their Somebody Today. [...]

Your Masterpiece

As many of you know, I love the phrase, "Make Today Your Masterpiece."  So much so that I decided to write a book with that title. In a recent workshop I was conducting, one of the participants asked me what would constitute a masterpiece on any given day. Well, a good question of course. The answer is personal. I responded by reminding everyone of the definition of a masterpiece. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines a masterpiece as, "Great work, showpiece, a perfect model, things done or made with masterful skill." What makes it personal is that at the end of each day, you reflect on your activity and your actions to determine if the day was your greatest work, your [...]
