Who is succeeding because of you?

I have learned one of the best ways to measure leaders is by whether their people are growing and improving.  Who in your organization is growing people? Who is playing caretaker? It is possible for leaders to have increased sales and production by simply just adding bodies. I have found however, it is best to determine their effectiveness by the growth of their people. We should always be looking for quality people to add to our team. In many cases the good people we are looking for are right under our nose. Have you set clear expectations? Equipped them with the tools and skills that are necessary to succeed? Have you given them fast and frequent feedback on their performance? [...]

Your Top 20% Club

If you spend all of your time trying to turn strugglers into survivors you'll have little time for the rewarding work of helping your good people become great. As leaders we are often faced with the critical question of. "Who should we invest most of our time with?" Most of us are familiar with the Pareto Principle of 80/20. In the example of business, 20% of the people in the organization are responsible for 80% of the results/success - you may refer to those folks as your Top Guns. Identify your top 20% and commit to investing a disproportionate amount of your time, energy, resources and rewards into their strengths. Jim Collins in his book, Built To Last suggested a [...]

The 3 P’s of Engagement

The fact is, leading effectively is almost impossible without employee engagement. You cannot lead a board, committee, an individual or a team if they are not engaged. We must strive to find the balance between PURPOSE-PASSION-PROCESS. Here's something for you to remember when you're building engagement in your organization. If you have a purpose and are passionate about what you do, but lack a process, you will waste people's time If you are passionate and have a process but you lack a sense of purpose, you will be like a flare that burns [...]

Create a culture of accountability.

What does a high accountability culture look like? Well, it doesn't happen overnight; the culture evolves from one person or event to the next. However, one common denominator is that in an accountability culture everyone holds each other accountable for their commitments in a positive and productive manner.  This type of culture is typically found in high performance teams. Teammates will not let their teammates down, and therefore, they perform creating a culture of high productivity and typically successful outcomes. As a leader, we need to be aware of accountability gaps. In many cases we are responsible for the gap. I have committed this sin. When assigning a task or a project, I have been at fault for not being clear [...]

Addressing difficult team members.

Here is the challenge: no one likes the idea of dealing with difficult people. As leaders,  we have no choice, it comes with the territory. In all my years, I believe I have experienced most of the types, here's a few: Arrogant know it all's Perpetual whiners (love them...) Mr. & Ms. Excuses The truth is we can't ignore these people. When these types of individuals aren't managed, they can become a plague in our organizations. Sometimes just one difficult person can can wipe out an entire team's effectiveness. What could be worse than not immediately dealing with these people? Your stronger team members experience your lack of addressing the issue and lose respect for your leadership abilities . If [...]
