Values Check

Values Check Our values inform our thoughts, words, and actions. As a leader, we must identify our own personal values and make sure they are in alignment with the organization's values. All of our leadership decisions should be based on: what is meaningful to us, what is essential to us, and what is non-negotiable to us.  It’s been said that when values are clear, decisions are easier. When we live out our values, we learn that they can act as our own personal tools by: Resembling a GPS:  they keep us on the right path.  Every journey has a path and even when we get off-course, our GPS brings us back. Living out our values keeps us on the right path. Acting [...]

Timeless Truths

Timeless Truths Over the past several months, reflection has become a key part of many of our daily lives. It could be the tumultuous time we're in, old age, or a combination of both (likely both in my case). Below are some truths I have learned over the years to help during challenging times: Start each day with a renewed commitment to be passionate about your leadership role. Leadership is a privilege, not a right. It's a responsibility, a way of life, and not a title. The first person you lead is yourself. We are responsible for our character, our competence and our courage. We can't delegate those responsibilities to anyone else, nor can we blame anyone other than ourselves [...]

How’s your listening?

How's your listening? Most leaders like to talk. We know communication is an essential leadership tool, but do we place the same level of emphasis and importance on active listening as we do communicating? We should. I love this quote by Edgar Watson Howe," No man would listen to you talk if he didn't know it was his turn next."  Yes, it's comical, but there may be some truth to it. Unfortunately, that may describe the way too many of us approach communication -- people are too busy waiting for their turn to really focus on the conversation as opposed to gaining knowledge and insight into what the other person is sharing. Are you guilty of that? I know I have [...]

Are you teachable?

As leaders we have the potential to face the danger of status quo. We are focused on supporting and developing our team, growing our business, and in today's current environment, we're learning new ways to manage, lead, and drive results remotely. At the end of the day, it's easy to neglect our own personal growth and development. Throughout my career, I have learned that we must remain teachable -- we must be on a journey of lifetime growth. A mentor of mine asked me this simple question, "When was the last time you did something for the first time?" Pause, and re-read that again. When was the last time YOU did something for the first time? Powerful question, right? When [...]

Dear Covid-19

Dear Covid-19, You arrived like a thief in the night. You are walking around like a roaring lion seeking his prey. It is true, you have had some victories. Our hearts and prayers are with loved ones who are suffering, or have experienced loss. But here is what you must know: YOU JUST WOKE UP THE SLEEPING GIANT. You see C-19, you have temporarily disrupted our everyday lives, but we have something that will last forever. You may not want to hear about it, but I'll give it to you anyway. You better be listening. You, ready? Here it comes: you can't take away our love for each other and our country, or our resilience and our perseverance. What you did provide us [...]
