Conflict is inevitable — now what?

The fact remains, that we will always have conflict. On the job, with the boss, if you’re the boss with employees, at home in our relationships, and even outside the home. Frankly, as a leader, IT COMES WITH THE TERRITORY, we may not like it, but as the overused statement goes “it is what it is." How well you manage and handle conflict can be a deal-breaker. Conflict is like fire. When it sparks, it can intensify, spread, and cause pain, loss, and irreparable damage. It can distract, derail, and possibly destroy relationships. However, conflict is not an inherently bad thing. Different views, beliefs, feelings, values, and ideas will often collide. That is everyday life. My main point is, that [...]

How effective are your one-to-one meetings?

Most leaders meet regularly with their team members; I refer to these meetings as Performance Evaluation Plan (PEP) sessions or one-to-one time. Ask open-ended questions to understand better what your team is focusing on and how you can best support them. It can be challenging to determine whether these meetings are well-invested or an ineffective checkmark. My experience has taught me not to turn this valuable time into a training session or a long, drawn-out strategy session. Instead, use this time to identify better execution, results, and behavior change. There may be some coaching and or mentoring during the PEP, so be careful not to park there too long and not get to a commitment to action. Your team member, coachee, or mentee may [...]

The trials of time management.

Napoleon Hill said, “ If you do not conquer yourself, you will be conquered by self.” We talk and hear a lot about self-discipline. There may be no other area in your life that is more important than how you manage your time; I believe it is a core discipline that largely determines the quality of your life. I have lived long enough to experience the consequences of not taking charge of “The Clock.” Here is what I know to be accurate: time is perishable; it cannot be saved; once it is gone, you can never get it back. All results require time. Time management is the ability to choose the sequence of events. We have to decide what comes; [...]

Five Critical Questions

Let's get real: being a leader is not for the weak. When you raised your hand or were asked to step up and lead, you accepted one heck of a challenge. Now might be an excellent time to check in on five critical questions on your leadership. CLARITY Are you clear on what you stand for? Are you clear on your vision? Are you clear on your strategies and objectives? Have the above been communicated? COMPETENCE Are you setting a standard of excellence in all areas of your influence? Are you continually and intentionally learning and growing in leadership skills? Are you continually seeking ways to improve your products and services to customers/clients? COMMITMENT Are you committed to the vision? [...]

Pay or praise?

Pay or praise? For many years I thought that money was the big motivator. Well, I learned that is not always the case. I read the following quote several years ago, and this quote alone has inspired me to lead differently,  “The deepest principle of human nature is the craving to be appreciated,” William Jones. Research suggests, “pay fairly and competitively.” However, the fundamental factors in keeping the good ones are: Challenge Growth Opportunities Flexibility Meaningful Work A leader who values them They want the (non-monetary forms listed above.) Certainly, perks are valuable; they help in the recruiting process. But, research has proven good ones won’t stay because of perks. Not everyone is motivated the same. As leaders, we need [...]
