How about a quick mid-year check-in on how we’re doing with some critical leadership competencies? I’ve found it’s a valuable practice to pause occasionally for a personal evaluation.

There’s no question, our teams want to follow leaders who are committed to growing in their craft. And for us as leaders, our craft is made up of the many competencies we’re expected to demonstrate daily in order to lead effectively.

Leadership isn’t static. It’s a learning process, challenging, ongoing, and built through experience. It doesn’t happen overnight. However, the good news is that we have more resources than ever to support our development, including webinars, podcasts, books, conferences, and more.

Below are a few key competencies worth reflecting on. Consider reviewing each one with a critical lens and asking yourself:

“What is one thing I could do now to grow in this area?”
Then choose one or two to focus on for the rest of the year.

  • Delegation
  • Communication
  • Vision Casting
  • Listening
  • Decision-Making
  • Problem-Solving
  • Prioritizing

The key is to be intentional. Make a plan, and build in some accountability. That might mean partnering with someone on your team, which takes courage. But showing up with transparency, openness, and vulnerability is one of the strongest signals of authentic leadership. People are drawn to that.

Wishing you all the best on your mid-year check-up. Keep growing.
