New Year. New Goal.

Most of us make New Year's resolutions. As you are likely to know, the statistics indicate the majority of us (70-75% ) do not follow through. I am certainly guilty. This year, I am challenging myself and the Lead One Community to make a new one. Let’s be intentional this year on growing personally. Let’s put a plan in place to improve in certain areas of our leadership. What new knowledge should be acquired? What skills need to be improved? What habits need to be formed or, in some cases, broken? We are in charge and control of our growth. Actually, as leaders, it is our responsibility. Let’s remember this—Learners are not always leaders—But great leaders are ALWAYS LEARNERS. Great leaders are on [...]

3 C’s for Effective Leadership

Today, I want to remind you of three important leadership competencies. I shared these three last week with an executive I coach in my coaching practice. Please allow me to share them with you. When we successfully execute the 3 C's, our leadership can be more effective. Here they are: BE CONSISTENT: Our leadership must be predictable. Our people must know how we will behave and decide in all circumstances. Our values are on display. They should not be surprised by the decision or your response. You are consistent. The old saying goes," Your actions speak so loud I can't hear a word you're saying." There is no place for wishy-washy leadership—we always live out our values. People follow a consistent leader.   BE [...]

Be aware of uploading.

Today, I am reminding us to be careful that we are not uploading. So what is uploading? Before I explain, I must admit I have been guilty of uploading. As leaders, we are very aware of the importance of communication. A critical part of communication is listening. I might argue that listening is the most important part of a two-way conversation. We have one-to-one conversations with people in our sphere of influence daily. Uploading takes place during these conversations. If you are thinking of your response when the other person is talking, that is "uploading." We would like to believe we are listening, but in reality, we are preparing (uploading) for our turn. The term "listening" is often used loosely. If [...]

Change: The influence for the future.

I love this quote: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." President John F. Kennedy. As leaders, we are influencers of events and people. Yes, we are known as CHANGE AGENTS. We don't need more room in our house for the status quo. This must be the mantra of every leader today. As a leader, you must promote continuous creativity, innovation, and improved performance as part of your STANDARD OPERATING PLAN (SOP). Here is the challenge: Most people rarely welcome change. They are comfortable with the status quo. The bottom line is that leaders were created to turn the status quo upside down and bring positive change. So, how [...]

Front-load accountability.

In most instances, our society tends to use the term accountability to determine who we punish when something has gone wrong. As leaders who are growing are people who, in turn grow our organizations, let's try a different approach to accountability. Let's "front-load" accountability. Here is what I mean. When you front-load accountability, you include specificity in your commitment. We don't simply say, "I expect you to do a good job." When we front-load, we clarify precisely what we want to be done, what success looks like, and why this is important. There is no ambiguity to the expectation. In an accountability culture, people take ownership of what is expected of them. They feel responsible for their team members and [...]
