In a recent workshop I conducted last week, we discussed the importance of our belief in our people. I’d like to share with you some of the thoughts I shared with the group.
For starters, your expectations, what you unconsciously think each of your people can produce and will produce, are powerful beliefs telepathically sent out to them. You see, what I know to be true is, you project these beliefs in your actions, attitudes, and behaviors.
Unconsciously we say, “I expect you to perform at a high level and do a great job.” Or we may project (not intentionally), “I really don’t expect too much.”
Your every action supports your belief. For example, how you look at someone could send a message, the tone of your voice etc. Often it is hard to hide.
My good friend and mentor Ron Willingham discusses the Law of Limited Performance. Here it is:
“People soon discover the level of performance their leader will settle for and gravitate to that level. The leader then assumes that’s all the person can achieve so that they accept it as fact and quit challenging the person to do better. So each reinforces the other’s beliefs.”
When you examine this law, you may conclude that much (if not all) of people’s performance is simply a result of beliefs. To be clear, I am not dismissing the importance of training and equipping them. However, once equipped and trained. YOUR BELIEFS HAVE A PLACE IN THEIR PERFORMANCE.
Bottom line—it’s time for a check-up on your beliefs.
