Focus on the Main Event: A New Way to Huddle

Most of us are familiar with boxing and the concept of the “Main Event.” Before the big fight, there are several preliminary bouts—the undercard. Fans watch these closely, anticipating the main event. In business and leadership, there’s always a Main Event too. Remember the phrase: “The main thing is the main thing.” This is the priority that deserves 100% of our focus. We must be fully committed and prepared to execute for success. Here’s a twist on this idea for teams that meet regularly for their huddle—whether daily or weekly. Typically, these meetings cover progress, numbers, and project updates. Instead, try this: ask each team member, including the leader, “What is your Main Event this week?” Everyone reports their priority. This not only [...]

Who is succeeding because of you?

Leadership is often defined simply: someone is following. No followers, no leadership. At its core, leadership is about influence, but its true function is not to gather followers; it’s to create more leaders. Getting Buy-In

As leaders, we are often called to stand in front of our teams and cast a compelling vision for the future. Whether it’s an organizational change, a major upcoming project, or a shift in strategy, effectively communicating that change is critical. But no matter the circumstances, we cannot go it alone. We need to bring others along with us. For any change to succeed, we need buy-in. While buy-in doesn’t guarantee success, without it, achieving your goals becomes far more challenging. So how do we secure buy-in? How do we bring the team to the point where they raise their hand and say, “I’m in”? What does it take? 1. The team must buy into the leader first. Trust is the foundation. The [...]

YOU—the CCO

As a leader, you may hold the title of CEO, CFO, or another role. But make no mistake: you are also the CCO—the Chief Communication Officer. John Hamm, in his book Usually Excellent, reminds us that “communication is to an organization like water to a garden—it keeps things vital, growing, and healthy.” Your people want to hear from you. They want to know: Where are we going? How will we get there? What’s really happening? What is my role? This isn’t new. We all know leaders must clearly communicate intentions and expectations. Yet in my own experience as both a business owner and coach, I’ve learned that most of us aren’t nearly as effective at communication as we think. The real question [...]
