Our most valuable resource.

What is our most valuable resource? I suggest it is time. It’s the most valuable because we don’t have infinite time. Time is a finite resource. Consider some commonly used phrases we find ourselves saying, such as time flies, I don’t have enough time, where does the time go? I’m wasting my time—I think you get the point. As leaders, prioritizing time is a critical competency we must strive to improve. You have meetings, appointments, deadlines, issues to deal with, strategies to develop, and the list goes on. We need to guard ourselves from the "tyranny of the urgent." Put another way--” the most noise gets your attention.” that may not be the best use of your time at that moment. [...]

Part two: Lifelong learning

Last week, I wrote about the importance of maintaining a lifelong learning mindset. Birthed when I first read the John Wooden quote, "It is what you learn after you know it all that counts." I shared two ways of learning: Our life experiences and reading about others. This week, I am sharing two more. But first, here is another quote I remember as a reminder of my commitment to learning. Ghandi said, "Live like you are going to die tomorrow and LEARN like you are going to live forever." This is another mandate for lifelong learning. Here are two more methods of learning: Other people's experiences. Today, we have many opportunities to glean from others: Podcasts, webinars, LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, and various posts. When others [...]

“It’s what you learn after you know it all that counts.”

Legendary UCLA Basketball coach John Wooden said this, which I have cherished for years. This quote has inspired me to be on a journey of lifelong learning. When you sign up for leadership, you also sign up for continual learning. Striving to improve, gain more knowledge, develop, or acquire skills required to be more effective in your leadership. In my emails for this week and next, I will briefly remind us of the ways in which we can learn. At the onset, I must remind us that we need to be intentional. Learning only happens with time. Your leadership is sharpened when we make intentional learning a priority. One of the ways we learn is from OUR EXPERIENCES. Every encounter, every [...]

Change: The influence for the future.

I love this quote: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future." President John F. Kennedy. As leaders, we are influencers of events and people. Yes, we are known as CHANGE AGENTS. We don't need more room in our house for the status quo. This must be the mantra of every leader today. As a leader, you must promote continuous creativity, innovation, and improved performance as part of your STANDARD OPERATING PLAN (SOP). Here is the challenge: Most people rarely welcome change. They are comfortable with the status quo. The bottom line is that leaders were created to turn the status quo upside down and bring positive change. So, how [...]

Too busy for the “soft stuff.”

Last week, I wrote about one of my clients who told me he was “too busy for the soft stuff.” He explained that he didn’t have enough time for regular one-to-one meetings with his top performers. As he put it, ”too busy putting out the fires.” He pointed out they are not ignored. They know they can come to me anytime they need me or have an issue. I asked him what would happen if he intentionally connected with them first instead of just responding. It seemed I got his attention when I asked him if he was too busy for his best and who he had time for. Who is getting your valuable time? Our meeting was about 6 -7 [...]
