Leadership is about action; there is no status quo. Leaders are agents of change, constantly moving everything forward.

For years, I have studied the habits and behaviors of leaders across various sectors, including business, government, athletics, industry, and education. Through this exploration, I have discovered that all great leaders share certain defining characteristics.

Here are a few of those traits that we can use as a benchmark to assess how closely we align with the greats. Perhaps there’s room for growth in your leadership by embracing one or two of these qualities:

  • Great leaders have a strong and compelling purpose. They are clear on their “why,” which makes decision-making easier as this purpose becomes their guiding filter.
  • Great leaders are committed to lifelong learning and growth, and they expect the same from their teams. They lead by example.
  • Great leaders prioritize developing others. They understand that leadership’s true function is to cultivate more leaders, not just followers.
  • Great leaders hold themselves to a high standard of excellence and expect the same from those around them. Everyone strives to maximize their individual potential.
  • Great leaders live by strong values every day. People want to follow principled leaders who stand confidently for their beliefs.
  • Great leaders remain deeply connected to their purpose, values, and resources. They know what matters, what challenges lie ahead, and why they do what they do. Simply put, there is no substitute for knowing your “why.”

These are just a few of the qualities that distinguish the great ones from the rest.

Is there one or two you’re willing to commit to improving? I promise it will make a difference. Remember, someone is waiting for your leadership.
