Today, I am reminding us to be careful that we are not uploading. So what is uploading? Before I explain, I must admit I have been guilty of uploading.

As leaders, we are very aware of the importance of communication. A critical part of communication is listening. I might argue that listening is the most important part of a two-way conversation.

We have one-to-one conversations with people in our sphere of influence daily. Uploading takes place during these conversations. If you are thinking of your response when the other person is talking, that is “uploading.” We would like to believe we are listening, but in reality, we are preparing (uploading) for our turn.

The term “listening” is often used loosely. If you and I were surveyed and asked if we were good listeners, we would give ourselves good grades. It is simple: just answer the question, “Have you ever uploaded?” I am guilty, for sure.

Most leaders would plead guilty. In our busy world, there is so much going on that it is sometimes challenging to be 100% locked into the other person and listen and feel what they are saying.

Incidentally, uploading is not limited to your professional world. It can happen at home, in social settings, etc. What we all know to be true is that everyone wants to be heard and feel valued and understood. For that to happen, I’m reminding us to listen intentionally and be sensitive to the “uploading” communication killer.
