Addressing difficult team members.

Here is the challenge: no one likes the idea of dealing with difficult people. As leaders,  we have no choice, it comes with the territory. In all my years, I believe I have experienced most of the types, here's a few: Arrogant know it all's Perpetual whiners (love them...) Mr. & Ms. Excuses The truth is we can't ignore these people. When these types of individuals aren't managed, they can become a plague in our organizations. Sometimes just one difficult person can can wipe out an entire team's effectiveness. What could be worse than not immediately dealing with these people? Your stronger team members experience your lack of addressing the issue and lose respect for your leadership abilities . If [...]

Your strengths based team.

Most of us are familiar with the Jim Collins quote, "Get the right people on the bus in the right seats."   A winning coach on a sports team would never put a player in a position where they do not leverage his or her strengths -- yet we experience this often in the workplace. So how can we fix this? To maximize the productivity of individual team members, consider the following: Identify what success looks like. What are the outcomes you want? Is each function/role in the team clearly defined? Once success is defined, develop a list of expected skill sets and behaviors needed to get results. Assess your team members' strengths. There are several tools to assist you in determining strengths. I like the assessment [...]

Provide clarity and purpose.

Many years ago while driving down the highway it suddenly started to rain, and then it started to pour. We have all been there and it's not enjoyable.  To make matters worse, my driver's side wiper was stuck and no longer functioning. White-knuckled terror shot through me as I struggled to see the road in front of me.  The obvious choice of pulling over and waiting didn't seem promising in the event that a car behind me lost sight and drifted, so I decided to keep going at a snail's pace. The windshield caused anxiety, certainly not providing any clarity on getting to my destination on time. The same situation can happen with your team if they are unclear about where they are [...]

How is your transparency?

How is your transparency? Don't let them see you sweat. Make sure you have all of the answers (after all, you're the boss). Tell them what they need to know -- nothing more; they can't handle it. Never admit mistakes; deflect if you can. Does this sound familiar? This was the management style that I was taught, and the mindset I thought leaders possessed. Thankfully, it didn't take me long to realize that people want (and deserve) authentic leadership. You want authentic people on your team, so make sure you're leading with integrity  Here are four simple ways you can boost your level of transparency and authenticity, and likely increase trust, productivity, and respect among your organization. Let others know who [...]

Delegation

Delegation As leaders, one of the more challenging aspects of leading a growing organization is letting go and trusting others. John Maxwell puts it simply, "If you want to do a few small things right, do them yourself. If you want to do great things and make a big impact, learn to delegate.” As the organization begins to scale up, typically 50+ employees, senior leadership must develop additional leaders who share the same values, passion, and knowledge of the business as they do in order to affect change throughout the organization. However, many leaders confuse delegation with abdication. Abdication is simply handing over a task to someone with no formal feedback mechanism. We need to be careful here. All systems need [...]
