Obey These Laws of Communication.

In leadership, one of our most powerful tools is the ability to communicate effectively. Yet despite our awareness, it’s easy to fall short of certain fundamental laws of communication. I’ll admit, over the years, I have unintentionally violated most, if not all, of them and faced the consequences. Here’s a reminder for all of us to be mindful, especially in one-on-one, face-to-face conversations: Always Be Listening: Fully engage with the other person, maintaining eye contact. Show that you value them and genuinely want to understand. Always Avoid Distractions: Put phones away and seek privacy whenever possible. Give your full attention. Always Be Mindful of Talking Down: It can be tempting when a point seems misunderstood, but remain approachable and collaborative. Always Avoid Confrontation: Address [...]

The Emotionally Intelligent Leader.

We are very familiar with the importance of EQ (emotional intelligence). There is an ongoing discussion of which is more important: IQ or EQ. Frankly, I don’t feel qualified to enter the debate. However, I have learned that developing people skills (a component of EQ) is critical to growing a business. Emotionally Intelligent leaders have a people-first mindset and can satisfy their own needs and wants while serving the needs and wants of those they lead. Our ability to develop connections and lasting relationships separates us as leaders. In my coaching practice, I encounter leaders who are too busy with strategy, marketing, product development, and systems, leaving insufficient time for people development. However, when asked what their most important asset [...]

What Great Leaders Have in Common

Over the years, I’ve read biographies and autobiographies of leaders from business, government, sports, and religion, people like Churchill, Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt, Jack Welch, and John Wooden. Studying their lives is like attending a masterclass in leadership. Despite their different fields, they share several key traits and behaviors. Four of these stand out, each beginning with the letter C: Courage – Great leaders demonstrate courage in the face of disaster, crisis, or chaos. They take necessary risks, often without full support, and push forward to achieve their goals. As leaders, we must embrace challenges with the courage to see them through. Commitment – They are committed to their vision, mission, and, importantly, their people. They understand the dreams and challenges of those they lead and connect with [...]

With Gratitude

Hello Lead One community. I would like to express my best wishes to you and your loved ones for a Happy Thanksgiving. I believe it is our human nature to think about what we don’t have or what we lack in our lives. In addition, we may find ourselves in comparison mode. I’m reminded of Eleanor Roosevelt's famous quote, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” If you think about this quote, there is a lot to unpack. When you focus on what you don’t have, you are robbing yourself of gratitude for what you do have and enjoy. Yes, it is true plenty is going on globally and within our country to have concerns. These events, we have little to no [...]

What It’s Like to Be on the Other Side of You

As we’ve learned, self-awareness is a core leadership competency and a critical part of developing emotional intelligence. Yet many leaders believe they’re more self-aware than they truly are. I’ll admit, I’ve been humbled over the years by my own blind spots. What has become clear to me is the strong connection between self-awareness and leadership effectiveness. The most impactful leaders remain hungry to learn, honest about their growth areas, and committed to leading by example. Becoming more self-aware is not only worthwhile, but it also benefits everyone we lead. From time to time, I ask myself a simple but revealing question: “What is it like to be on the other side of me?” I encourage you to do the same. A brief self-check [...]
